Bhaag Milkha Bhaag a man who will change the face of India, from a little known individual to an icon. This film is based on the true story of Milkha Singh an athlete from Amritsar, Punjab. Brought up in extreme poverty and deprivation, he eventually became one of India’s best athletes winning medals in events such as 400m at the Olympics and World Championships in Athletics. He also became a national hero when he won Pakistan’s National Championship for 800 meters. But his biggest victory was at the National Games when Bhaag Milkha became a household name across India after winning several gold medals consecutively against challengers from all over India. Milkha Singh was the only athlete to win gold in all 3 events at National Games held in Calcutta in 1958, which was commemorated by the Government of India by issuing commemorative postage stamps. The movie starts with a voice over by Milkha Singh (Shah Rukh Khan) explaining how his life changed after winning the National Games, and this is followed by a scene of an old man wearing sunglasses talking about how he should have changed his name to ‘Bhaag Milkha Bhaag’, implying that he has become a complete man ever since he won the national games. The movie then cuts to what happened during those days. The movie begins with Milkha Singh (Shah Rukh Khan) arriving in Bombay along with his parents to take part in the National Games. He wins gold in all three events, but his father (Aamir Khan) is against Milkha Singh’s decision of representing India. He owns a Gymnasium there and wants Milkha to find other jobs given that he is no longer the national champion. His mother (Kabir Bedi), who dreams of Milkha becoming an engineer, later tries to persuade him to look for another job. When his mother promises to take care of the bills if he wins gold at the National Games she declares “Milkha Singh has won gold medals” . The family joins him on the train to Calcutta for the National Games. The movie then cuts to an old man, who is shown wearing sunglasses on multiple occasions, usually when he is talking about Milkha Singh’s situation or talking about how India would have been different if Milkha Singh had chosen to chase other jobs. He talks of how he deserved the national title more than Milkha Singh and warns him about letting go of his dreams. He urges him to make India proud by winning at least one more gold medal in the National Games. Despite his father suggesting him to take on jobs such as a police constable and a teacher, he chooses to pursue his passion of running. The release of Bhaag Milkha Bhaag was delayed by several months due to some unknown reason. The film was originally supposed to hit the theaters in December 2012 and then it was postponed several times and finally released on July 5, 2013. Upon release the film received mostly positive reviews from critics and audiences alike. It received an 8/10 rating on IMDb and met with generally favorable reviews from critics with an 86% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 5 reviews. Nandini Ramnath of Scroll. cfa1e77820
